Which password manager should you choose?
Using the same password everywhere? We won't lecture you. We'll just show you how to fix the problem in 10 minutes.
Let's be honest: you have a password problem
On average, a person has 80 to 100 online accounts. Most people reuse the same 3-4 passwords everywhere. When just one site gets hacked (it happens all the time), your password ends up in a database sold on the dark web.
A password manager solves this. You remember one password (the master password), and the manager generates and stores all the others. Each site gets a unique, long, random password.
My 2026 ranking
Bitwarden
Free (Premium: 10 EUR/yr)
Best value by far. Open source, audited, zero-knowledge. The free version does everything 90% of people need.
1Password
2.99 EUR/mo
Best user experience. Polished interface, Travel Mode, Watchtower. More expensive but worth it for comfort.
Proton Pass
Free (Plus: 1.99 EUR/mo)
Built-in email aliases — each site gets a different email. Young but promising.
KeePass
Free
100% local, nothing leaves your computer. Ultra-secure but not user-friendly.
How to migrate in 10 minutes
- Install Bitwarden — browser extension + mobile app.
- Export your current passwords from Chrome or your current manager (CSV file).
- Import into Bitwarden: Tools > Import Data > choose your format.
- Verify your accounts are there. Test 2-3 logins.
- Delete the CSV file — it contains all your passwords in plain text!
- Disable Chrome's password manager.
The master password
- Minimum 16 characters. Use a passphrase.
- Never reused elsewhere.
- Enable 2FA on your manager. Use a TOTP app, not SMS.
- Write down your recovery key physically (paper in a safe).
FAQ
Isn't it dangerous to put all passwords in one place?
Counterintuitively, a manager with zero-knowledge encryption is infinitely safer than reusing passwords from memory.
Is the browser's built-in manager enough?
For very basic use, it works. But it only works in one browser, is targeted by malware, and doesn't generate robust passwords by default.
Do I need to pay?
Free Bitwarden does 95% of the job. The 10 EUR/year Premium adds integrated TOTP and security reports.
